Confusing Appearances with Reality

It is said that once the great Akbar drew a line and demanded of his wise man, Birbal, that he shorten the line without cutting or erasing from either side. Couldn't he just have started erasing from the middle and out to one of the two sides?

I think that would count as "cutting". =)

Well, it depends what the line was drawn on but how about folding?
